Sanj's Triathlon for Leukemia

"Family Life. Don't take either for granted."

Dear Friends and Family:

I wonder if I could get your help. A few short weeks ago, I found myself in a rather poor state of health and mindset, grousing about the state of the economy, and feeling sedentary and tired. Through a friend, I became aware of a group called “Team in Training” that raises money for Leukemia research by helping people get in shape for endurance races such as marathons and triathalons. After a bit of research, I found out that they are a wonderful group of people and enjoy an excellent reputation among Bay Area athletes and the medical research community with over 75% of money raised going directly to research activities.

I also have reflected on the loss my family suffered a few years back. My cousin, Naresh, while living in India, discovered he had leukemia. With the support and love of many family members, he journeyed from India to receive medical care here in the United States. It was to no avail. He died as a young man leaving a wife and three-year-old daughter. Naresh was not alone. An estimated 109,500 people in the United States will be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma this year. Every nine minutes, a child or adult dies from leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma.

To honor Naresh, help myself become a more healthy and mindful person, and support the thousands of others afflicted with blood cancers, I decided to train for the Olympic distance Pacific Grove Triathlon (0.93 mile ocean swim, 24.8 mile bike, and 6.2 mile run – all in one day).

I waited to send this letter until I had proven to myself that I was truly committed to the cause and the time intensive training regimen. Although I have been training since May 1, I am not yet in shape to complete this race. Yet, I plan to continue training hard over the remaining month or so to complete this event. And, I have committed to raising a minimum of $3,100 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to fund programs supporting patients, their families, and to further research to eradicate Leukemia and related cancers.

Please help me by completing the sponsor form and returning it to me with your tax-deductible contribution by August 31st, 2002. I will be sending everyone a thank you letter and acknowledgment for your tax records. With your generous support, I will cross the finish line in Pacific Grove, and we will all contribute to the end of Leukemia and Lymphoma in the 21st century.

I will be posting a diary and photos on my website at http://sanj.pledgepage.com. Please check my site, email or call if you have any questions.

Thank you in advance for all of your support.
